Aircraft Maintenance Engineering is a three-year undergraduate degree licensed program. Aircraft An Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME) is a person licensed by the DGCA, Government of India, to perform and certify the repair of aircraft, aircraft engines, and their components. The Aircraft maintenance engineer is in charge of all technical tasks related to the ground operation of the aircraft to keep
it in optimal flying condition by doing maintenance according to the manufacturer's schedule.
An Aircraft Maintenance Engineer is solely responsible for the maintenance and overhaul of aircraft, aero engines, instrumentation, electrical and radio systems, and accessories. An AME's role is to guarantee that the aircraft is ready to fly before it takes off.
AMEs work in maintenance hangars, repair stations, and on the flight line, playing a crucial role in preventing accidents and ensuring the reliability of air travel. Their expertise is vital for the operational efficiency and safety of both commercial and private aviation sectors.
Students who are passed their Class Xll examination with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics from a recognized board or university or three year diploma (Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics or Aeronautical) or it’s equivalent are eligible to apply. Students must also be medically-fit. Foreign students need to obtain security clearance through DGCA for admission to the course.
The Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (AME) license course is not recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC), All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), or the Ministry of Education in India. Instead, it is regulated and approved by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the authority responsible for civil aviation safety and standards. The DGCA ensures that AME institutes adhere to stringent standards and that the training provided meets the requirements for maintaining aircraft airworthiness. Completing a DGCA-approved AME course and passing the necessary exams qualify individuals to become licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineers in India.
The job prospects for Aircraft Maintenance Engineers (AMEs) are promising, given the growth in the aviation industry. Here are some potential career opportunities for AMEs:
AMEs can work with commercial airlines, performing regular maintenance and ensuring the airworthiness of aircraft.
These specialized facilities employ AMEs to conduct comprehensive maintenance and repairs on aircraft and their components.
AMEs can work in the production and assembly of aircraft, ensuring that each unit meets stringent safety standards.
Opportunities exist within bodies like the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for roles in inspection, regulation, and oversight.
The Indian Air Force, Navy, and other defense services employ AMEs for maintaining their fleets of aircraft.
Private charter companies and smaller aviation firms also require AMEs to maintain their aircraft.
Teaching and training roles in educational institutions that offer AME programs.
The growing demand for air travel and the expansion of the aviation sector both domestically and internationally contribute to the increasing need for skilled AMEs.
